"China is a very complicated place,
which makes it a big challenge for me," says Betsy Nathan, the owner of Pagoda Red, a leading resource for Chinese furniture and
artifacts. To take on that challenge, Betsy studied Mandarin Chinese every day after work at the house of a Northwestern professor
before she moved to Beijing for two years and immersed herself in the culture.
Now Betsy travels to China frequently shopping for her Chicago store. She especially likes eighteenth- and nineteenth-century
pieces from the northern province of Shanxi and 1930s upholstered blackwood Deco furniture from Shanghai. She also offers a large
collection of architectural artifacts, including lattice window panels and stone columns. She explains of her fascination for the
eastern country, "I like to find unusual things, and there is lots to be discovered in China still." |
